A gel battery is a type of VRLA lead-acid battery in which silica is added to the electrolyte to create a gel-like substance. This design reduces electrolyte movement and lowers the risk of leakage.
The technology used in gel batteries is similar to AGM technology, but instead of using absorbent glass mat separators, gel batteries use a thickened electrolyte. This makes them suitable for applications where stable, maintenance-free performance is required.
Applications of gel batteries
Gel batteries are commonly used in telecommunication systems, UPS units, golf carts, forklifts and other equipment that requires reliable stored energy. Because the electrolyte is immobilized in gel form, users do not need to check the electrolyte level regularly, and the risk of leakage is lower than in flooded batteries.
Care and charging of gel batteries
Gel batteries must be charged carefully. To prevent excessive gas formation inside the cells, they should be charged at a lower voltage and at the correct rate. Overcharging can reduce battery life and may cause irreversible damage.
Advantages of gel batteries
Gel batteries reduce the risk of acid leakage because of their sealed, valve-regulated design. They offer good charge and discharge cycle performance, produce minimal hydrogen gas during operation, and can be used in applications with limited ventilation. They also perform well in cold weather and are suitable for deep-cycle use, meaning they can handle repeated charge and discharge cycles better than many conventional flooded batteries.
Disadvantages of gel batteries
Gel batteries are more expensive than conventional flooded batteries. Their charging process is slower, and they are especially sensitive to overcharging at high voltage. Heat is another major factor that can reduce battery life, so temperature control is important.
Gel batteries from Sepahan Battery
Sepahan Battery manufactures gel-technology batteries for UPS and solar applications. UPS batteries are used wherever backup energy storage is required, such as computers, office equipment, laboratory equipment, fire alarm systems and elevators. Solar batteries are suitable for applications requiring frequent charge and discharge cycles with deeper discharge, especially energy storage from renewable sources such as solar panels and wind turbines.
