The table below gives an overview of possible reasons for faults or defects in batteries.

Identified fault Possible causes and action
Acid spilling from the filling opening Possible cause: Battery overfilled
Action: Lower battery fluid level
Important: Fill batteries for lighting in two stages!
Acid level too low Possible causes: Battery case leaking, substantial gas formation from overcharging.
Action: New battery, check or repair charger
Acid density too low (< 1.240 kg/dm³), difficult to start Possible causes: Insufficient charge, forgetting to disconnect electrical consumers, short-circuit
Action: Recharge, check charger (regulator, alternator, electrical system)
Acid density too high (> 1.290kg/dm³) Possible cause: Battery was filled with acid rather than distilled water
Action: Reduce the acid level in the battery and fill up with distilled water, repeat if necessary
Difficult to start, poor starting test, voltage falls under load Possible causes: Battery is empty, battery worn out (positive plate corroded, grid plate of the positive plate worn out), battery cell faulty, battery capacity too low, battery sulfated
Action: Charge empty battery (faulty batteries must not be charged), install new battery
Burnt out battery terminals Possible causes: Poor electrical connection, battery not properly connected
Action: Tighten battery connector firmly and replace connector if necessary
One or two battery cells bubble when heavily loaded (when starting or during start test) Possible causes: A faulty cell, terminal connecting strap leaking
Action: Tighten battery connector and replace connector if necessary
Battery discharged very quickly Possible causes: Charge state of battery too low, short-circuit, battery sulfated (the plates are hard and sometimes white)
Action: Check charge state of battery, replace battery
Short service life Possible causes: Wrong type of battery, deep discharged too often, stored too long in a deep discharged condition
Action: : Install HEAVY DUTY or power transmission and lighting battery, battery to be charged with a rectifier occasionally
Battery becomes hot when in use and consumes high levels of water Possible causes: Overcharging, charging voltage too high
Action: Check charger (voltage regulator)
The battery has exploded Possible causes: Fire or sparking shortly after battery charging, static charges, short-circuit in vehicle, connected or disconnected while under load, internal fault
Action: Replace battery
The battery is not working at all Possible causes: Fault inside battery, battery deep discharged
Action: Replace battery
